What shades of brown are available?

Our brown rugs span pale to deep:Light brown rugs: A soft, pale tone that reads as a warm neutral in almost any room.Dark brown rugs: Strong, grounding shades that work as a contrast against pale walls and flooring.Chocolate brown rugs: A rich, warm mid-to-dark brown, and one of our most popular shades.Taupe rugs: A greyish-brown that gives a cooler, more contemporary neutral.Beige and brown rugs: Two-tone designs that pair a light neutral base with brown detailing, for texture without a single strong colour.

Where should a brown rug be placed?

Living room: A mid-to-dark brown living room rug grounds a seating area without competing with your sofa or other furniture. Rest at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs on the rug so it anchors the space instead of floating in the middle of the floor.Bedroom: A softer, lighter brown bedroom rug keeps the room feeling calm and warm underfoot rather than making a statement. Centre it under the end two-thirds of the bed, so there’s an even border either side to step onto.Dining room: A mid-to-dark brown dining room rug is a practical choice, as it hides everyday spills and crumbs better than a pale rug in a room that gets heavy use. Leave 60–70 cm of rug beyond the table on every side, so all the chairs stay on the rug even when pulled out to sit down.

Brown rugs: Chocolate, dark and taupe rugs

Brown rugs work as a steady neutral in almost any room, and the shade you pick changes the effect: light brown and tan sit comfortably against pale walls and neutral schemes, while chocolate and dark brown rugs bring out the warmth in wood flooring and pair well with other earthy tones. Choose from a range of materials, shapes and sizes below to find the perfect brown rug for your space.

Choosing the right brown rug

Brown is one of the most practical colours to buy a rug in. It hides everyday marks, footprints and pet hair better than a pale rug. Unlike some bolder colours, brown is less likely to clash with wood, tile or existing carpet – useful if you’re likely to change your sofa, walls or flooring before you replace the rug itself. That practicality carries through the material range too: wool holds its colour and resists staining, making it a durable everyday choice; cotton is light enough to lift and move for cleaning; and outdoor-ready polyester or polypropylene weaves keep their brown tone through the damp and UV exposure that fades other colours faster.

Frequently asked questions

Our brown rugs span pale to deep:

Light brown rugs: A soft, pale tone that reads as a warm neutral in almost any room.
Dark brown rugs: Strong, grounding shades that work as a contrast against pale walls and flooring.
Chocolate brown rugs: A rich, warm mid-to-dark brown, and one of our most popular shades.
Taupe rugs: A greyish-brown that gives a cooler, more contemporary neutral.
Beige and brown rugs: Two-tone designs that pair a light neutral base with brown detailing, for texture without a single strong colour.

Brown pairs naturally with cream, beige, grey and green – cream and beige lift a dark brown rug and stop a room feeling heavy, while grey gives a cooler, more modern contrast. Green furnishings echo brown’s earthy tone for a natural, grounded look. If your walls or sofa are already a warm neutral, a lighter tan rug will blend in rather than stand out.

Our collection ranges from small brown rugs (ideal for a hallway or bedside spot) and medium sizes (for a compact room) up to large brown rugs (ideal for a living room seating area) and extra large brown rugs to sit under a dining table or a bigger room. Choose light brown or tan if your room is already dark or has little natural light, as it reflects more light and keeps the space feeling open. Choose a darker chocolate brown rug if you want it to ground the room or you have a lot of pale flooring and walls – this adds contrast without introducing a new colour.

Yes – brown acts as a neutral base, so it won’t compete with a bold sofa, patterned cushions or colourful artwork the way a bright rug can. A plain, single-coloured brown rug is the safer choice if your furniture already has pattern or colour; save a patterned brown rug – checkered, abstract or striped – for a room where everything else is kept simple.
