Buy dining room rugs online

A dining room rug needs to do two jobs at once: look good and cope with chairs, crumbs and spills. Our dining room rugs range from small pieces that sit neatly under a two-seat bistro table to extra large sizes for ten-seat family tables. Choose from round, rectangular and square shapes in various materials, colours, styles and washable designs to find the perfect match for your dining room.

Choosing a rug for the dining room

A rug earns its place in the dining room by doing a job, not just adding style. It softens hard flooring underfoot, takes the edge off the noise of chairs scraping and cutlery clattering, and helps mark out the dining area when it’s part of an open-plan kitchen or living space. That’s why it’s one of the more popular rooms to add a rug to.

Dining spaces come with their own challenges — spilled drinks, dropped cutlery, kids’ breakfasts — and choosing a Rugvista dining room rug ensures you have something that’s designed to handle this, while also adding an extra spark of style and personality to the room. Whether you’re into bold modern designs, statement-making styles or classic oriental patterns, our selection of dining room rugs has got you covered.

Frequently asked questions

As a rule of thumb, allow 60–70 cm of rug beyond each side of your table so chairs stay on the rug even when pulled right out. A four-seat table usually works with a medium-sized rug for the dining room (160–229 cm), a six-seat table with a large dining room rug (230–349 cm), and an eight-to-ten-seat table needs an extra large dining room rug (350 cm+).

Match the rug shape to your table where you can: rectangular tables generally sit best on rectangular dining room rugs, and round tables on round dining room rugs. It’s not a strict rule — a round rug under a rectangular table, or vice versa, can work well and adds some visual contrast if that’s the look you want.

Low pile is the practical choice for a dining room. Chair legs and casters glide over it easily, crumbs sit on the surface rather than sinking in, and it’s quicker to hoover. High-pile designs look inviting but are harder to keep clean under a table and can catch on chair legs.

Dining room rugs made from wool are popular all-rounders: naturally stain-resistant, durable and easy to spot-clean. Cotton options are lighter and simpler to lift and shake out. If spills are a regular occurrence, a washable dining room rug lets you put the whole thing in the machine.

It’s not essential, but a rug adds warmth underfoot, muffles the sound of chairs and cutlery, and helps define the dining area in an open-plan room. If you’re unsure, a low-pile or washable option is the safest starting point, since it gives you the look without adding to the cleaning.
