Runner rugs

A runner rug is a long, narrow rug – usually around 80 cm wide – designed for corridors and other slim spaces. Also called a carpet runner, it comes in lengths from 80 x 200 cm up to 80 x 500 cm at Rugvista, so it suits everything from a short entryway to a full hallway.

Runners are typically about 80 cm wide, with lengths grouped into short runners (under 160 cm), long runners (230–349 cm) and extra-long runners (over 350 cm). Popular sizes include 80 x 200 cm, 80 x 250 cm, 80 x 300 cm, 80 x 350 cm and 80 x 500 cm, with a few wider and one-of-a-kind hand-knotted sizes too.

Measure the length of your hallway and choose a runner that leaves roughly 20–30 cm of bare floor at each end and 10–12 cm along each side, so it sits centred without crowding the skirting. An 80 x 250 cm or 80 x 300 cm runner fits most hallways; for a long corridor, size up to 80 x 400 cm or 80 x 500 cm rather than laying two runners end to end.

It depends on where it goes. Jute is hard-wearing and easy to clean, which suits high-traffic hallways and kitchens. Wool is warm, resilient and naturally stain-resistant, while cotton is lighter and often washable – both feel soft in a bedroom or living room. Silk and viscose look luxurious but are delicate, so keep them to low-traffic spaces.
