Large kitchen rugs, 160x230 to 240x340

Large kitchen rugs measure 230 to 349 cm on their longest side and do two jobs. Long, narrow sizes such as 70 x 300 cm and 80 x 250 cm run the length of a galley kitchen, while room sized rugs such as 200 x 300 cm suit an open plan kitchen diner. Choose a low pile or flatweave so crumbs and spills lift off easily. If the room matters more to you than the size, browse all kitchen rugs.

Choosing a rug for a kitchen diner or a long run of counter

Kitchens are the room where a rug takes the most punishment, so material does more work here than pattern. Cotton and synthetic flatweaves handle spills best and many are machine washable at 30°C, though that only really helps at the runner sizes, since a 200 x 300 cm rug is unlikely to fit a domestic drum. If washability is the deciding factor, washable kitchen rugs is the place to start, and kitchen runner rugs covers the narrow sizes on their own. Wool copes well with everyday traffic and resists marks, but it needs spot cleaning rather than washing. Jute is the one to avoid in a kitchen, as it can’t be soaked without risking shrinkage and discolouration. Kitchen floors are usually tile, vinyl or wood, so add an anti slip underlay whichever size you choose, and shake the rug out regularly rather than waiting for a full clean. For the same sizes in other rooms, see large rugs.

Frequently asked questions

Allow 60 to 70 cm beyond each side of the table so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. A four seat table suits 160 x 230 cm, a six seat table 200 x 300 cm, and a round kitchen table pairs with Ø 240 cm or Ø 250 cm. Keep the pile low so chairs move without catching.

A long runner is the better answer there. Sizes such as 70 x 300 cm and 80 x 250 cm follow the line of the counter, give you cushioning where you actually stand, and leave the oven and dishwasher doors clear.

Some are, at 30°C, and they’re mostly cotton or synthetic flatweaves. Check your machine’s capacity before you buy, because a runner will usually fit a domestic drum while 200 x 300 cm will not. For anything that size, plan on spot cleaning and a professional clean once in a while instead.

Cotton and synthetic flatweaves are the most practical, as they shrug off spills and many can be washed. Wool holds up well to traffic and hides marks, but it needs spot cleaning rather than soaking.

It can, which is why a low pile or flatweave matters here. A flat rug is less likely to bunch up underfoot, and an anti slip underlay keeps it in place on tile, vinyl and wood. Check the rug lies flat after washing too, as edges can lift slightly while it dries.
