“I look at spaces in terms of compositions — the same way an artist looks at a canvas”

– Liza Chloë van Duyn, interior stylist & photographer

How has your experience as photographer and stylist impacted the way you see a room?

Because my background is photography, I look at spaces in terms of compositions — the same way an artist looks at a canvas. I try to bring balance in rooms with heavy objects versus lighter objects. But also: where do I bring in color? How much impact does it have on the canvas? I like things to be asymmetrical. You can see that in my house if you have a closer look.

What is a home to you?

A home to me is a space that is allowed to get messy. That gives freedom — for social flow, for intimacy, for days not touching it, for messy moments — and for it to also look really, really good once it’s tidy.

How does the city influence how you design your home?

I believe I’m mostly inspired by objects. Not even spaces. I trust the process of building a space more than finding the right objects. For me personally, it’s mostly about sourcing and being very good at curating.

What do you look for when you bring something new into your home?

I get very inspired by craftsmanship. If I can see that an object has been made with respect and patience and love, it gets a place in my house. But sometimes it’s just a color, a type of surface I’m missing in my home. It can be many things, but I need to be inspired by it.

What impact does a rug have in a room, according to you?

I’m a strong believer you cannot build a space without rugs. Because rugs are a very efficient way to bring in texture, to bring in color, maybe even a pattern. And without the rug, it will feel flat. The space doesn’t have any depth. If you look at my house, every space has a rug.
To me, a rug is a fundamental base in an interior. It’s an easy element to integrate texture, color and depth into your space. And that’s the best part about a rug.
