The Afshar Shahre Babak rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic Afshar tribes of the Middle East. Historically, these tribes were known for their mastery of weaving, creating textiles that were both functional for life on the move and deeply symbolic of their cultural identity.

The term Shahre Babak refers to a specific region known for producing some of the most refined examples within the broader Afshar tradition. These rugs are highly regarded for their robust construction and the use of high-quality, durable Wool, which is carefully sourced and prepared to withstand years of use while retaining its vibrant colour and lustre.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their bold geometric language. They often feature large, centralised diamond-shaped medallions, which are sometimes referred to as 'crab' or 'turtle' motifs, surrounded by intricate, stylised floral or tribal patterns. The contrast between the bold central design and the detailed borders creates a rhythmic, balanced look that is a hallmark of the style.

Owning an Afshar Shahre Babak rug is an investment in a living tradition. These pieces are highly prized by collectors for their authenticity and the sheer skill required to produce them. By bringing one into your home, you are not just acquiring a floor covering, but a piece of cultural heritage that tells the story of the artisans and the generations of weavers who came before them.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to every single piece. The process involves tying thousands of individual knots to create a dense, resilient pile, a labour-intensive method that ensures the rug's structural integrity and longevity.

With a total of 700,000 knots placed by hand across its 2.8 m2 surface, this rug represents a significant commitment to traditional skill. This high density is what allows for such intricate, sharp pattern work and a pile that feels substantial and rich to the touch.

The substantial weight of 7 kg further highlights the quality of the materials and the density of the construction. By investing this much time and high-quality material into every square centimetre, the artisans create a durable, heirloom-worthy item that is designed to last for generations.
