Afshar Shahre BabakHand KnottedRug

Brown / BlackRunner97 x 285 cm

The Afshar Shahre Babak rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of the Middle East. These rugs are highly regarded for their connection to ancient weaving traditions that have been passed down through generations. The Shahre Babak region is particularly famous for producing pieces that balance technical precision with the raw, expressive energy of tribal art.

The term Afshar refers to the tribal group, while Shahre Babak denotes the specific locale where these rugs are traditionally woven. The use of hand-knotted techniques in this tradition is legendary, often utilising wool from mountain-raised sheep. This wool is prized for its high lanolin content, which gives the finished rug a natural sheen and inherent resilience against heavy foot traffic.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their complex, stylised motifs. You will often find geometric arrangements and repeating patterns that hold deep cultural meaning for the weaving community. The borders are typically elaborate, framing the central field with a rhythmic sequence of shapes that draw the eye and create a sense of movement across the surface.

Collectors value these rugs not only for their beauty but for their cultural weight. Owning an authentic piece from this region is an act of preserving a craft that is increasingly rare in our modern world. It represents a commitment to supporting traditional livelihoods and keeping the history of Middle Eastern textile arts alive in contemporary homes.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused labour to complete a single piece. The process involves tying thousands of individual knots to build a dense and resilient pile, ensuring a level of precision and quality that cannot be replicated by machinery.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the construction of this rug is exceptionally fine. This high knot count is directly responsible for the sharpness of the patterns and the longevity of the rug. It represents a significant investment of human skill, where every knot is placed with intention to create a durable, heirloom-quality floor covering.

The weight of 6.9 kg across its 285 x 97 cm dimensions serves as tangible evidence of the generous amount of wool used and the tightness of the weave. This weight is a hallmark of superior craftsmanship, indicating a robust foundation that provides stability and ensures the rug will lay flat and wear beautifully over time.
