Aubusson - TappissereHand WovenRug

Brown / Dark red182 x 283 cm

The Aubusson style finds its roots in the small French town of the same name, which became world-renowned for its exquisite tapestries in the 17th and 18th centuries. While originally designed for wall hangings, the intricate floral and medallion motifs eventually transitioned into floor coverings, influencing rug design globally. Today, the tradition is kept alive by skilled weavers who interpret these classic French patterns with contemporary precision.

The term tapestry weave refers to the specific construction method where the design is created directly by the way the threads are interwoven rather than through a knotted pile. This technique results in a flat, durable surface that allows for incredibly detailed, painterly designs. It is a highly demanding craft that requires the weaver to manage complex colour changes and delicate transitions with extreme accuracy.

Signature elements of this tradition include balanced, symmetrical compositions, often framed by ornate borders. The central field typically features a medallion, frequently containing botanical or avian motifs like the peacock seen here, which symbolises beauty and renewal. The use of a soft, sophisticated colour palette is designed to complement elegant interiors while providing a sense of historical gravitas.

Owning an Aubusson-inspired piece is a way to connect with a long lineage of textile artistry. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and design enthusiasts alike for their ability to merge decorative flair with functional longevity. By acquiring this one-of-a-kind piece, you are celebrating the skill of the artisans who continue to honour these storied design traditions.

This rug is meticulously hand-woven, a process that requires immense focus and steady hands. By building the design thread by thread, the artisans achieve a level of clarity and sharpness in the patterns that is simply impossible to replicate with machinery. This traditional method ensures that each curve of the floral motifs and every detail of the central peacock is rendered with precision.

The quality of this piece is evidenced by its weight of 5.2 kg. This density of material signifies a robust construction that speaks to the significant time and effort required to complete such a complex design. Because every knot and weave is placed by hand, the creation of this rug represents a labour-intensive journey that transforms raw materials into a durable, heirloom-quality floor covering.
