Aubusson - TappissereHand WovenRug

Black / Brown244 x 305 cm

The Aubusson style finds its roots in the historic French town of the same name, where the production of magnificent woven floor coverings flourished during the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally commissioned for the royal courts and aristocratic estates of Europe, these designs were famous for their painterly quality, often mimicking the lush floral arrangements and architectural scrolls found in fine oil paintings.

While the style originated in France, the tradition of weaving these elaborate designs has evolved and spread globally. Today, master artisans in regions like China have mastered the intricate techniques required to replicate these classic motifs, often using traditional hand-weaving methods that honour the historical aesthetic while adapting to contemporary tastes and needs.

The signature design language of an Aubusson-style rug is defined by its focus on elegance and symmetry. You will typically find a central medallion or floral bouquet surrounded by elaborate acanthus scrolls, garlands of flowers, and sophisticated borders. These elements work together to create a sense of depth and formal beauty, making the rug feel like a piece of art laid directly upon the floor.

Owning a piece in this tradition is about connecting with a long history of decorative craft. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and design enthusiasts alike, not just for their striking visual impact, but for the skill required to bring such complex, flowing patterns to life in a woven medium. It is a way to bring a piece of cultural heritage into your home.

This rug is entirely hand-woven, a process that requires immense skill and patience to achieve such precise detail. The intricate floral motifs and ornate borders are the result of careful, manual labour, ensuring that every curve and petal is rendered with intention and grace.

Given its generous size of 305 by 244 cm and a weight of 7.4 kg, this piece represents a significant investment of time and human effort. The density of the weave is a testament to the artisan's dedication, resulting in a robust structure that balances delicate visual beauty with the strength needed for long-term enjoyment in your home.
