Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

BlackRunner84 x 204 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, which historically served as a major trading hub for nomadic and settled tribes. Over generations, weavers migrated and brought these distinctive weaving traditions southward into Pakistan, where the craft found a vibrant new home and evolved to achieve extraordinary levels of refinement.

The designation 3ply refers to the specific construction of the pile yarn, which is twisted from three individual strands of wool before knotting. This three-ply twist produces a thicker, stronger and more lustrous pile compared to simpler single-strand alternatives, ensuring the rug handles daily foot traffic while maintaining its rich texture.

Visually, Bokhara carpets are defined by their orderly arrangement of repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions set in straight rows across the field. While traditional Bokhara rugs are most commonly seen in shades of red, this striking piece features a distinctive black field that highlights the intricate details of the ivory motifs and formal geometric borders.

Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara runner means acquiring a tangible piece of textile history and cultural continuity. These rugs are valued by collectors and homeowners alike for the months of human skill required to make them, representing an enduring tradition of craftsmanship that transcends fleeting interior trends.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, a region renowned for its rich carpet-making heritage. The craft requires immense patience, steady hands and a high level of technical skill passed down through generations.

With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2, artisans individually tie hundreds of thousands of tiny knots onto the foundation threads across the 204 x 84 cm area. For a rug of this size and density, the weaving process alone demands several months of dedicated daily labor.

Weighing 5.3 kg, the runner features a dense and robust construction that reflects the substantial amount of natural wool and human effort invested in its creation. This careful hand-knotting ensures not only structural integrity but also sharp pattern clarity and a long lifespan.
