China 90 LineHand KnottedRug

Brown / Beige60 x 90 cm

Chinese rugs carry a rich history that dates back centuries, often reflecting the deep cultural appreciation for nature and symbolism. Traditionally, these rugs were influenced by imperial tastes, incorporating motifs that signify prosperity, longevity, and beauty. The evolution of the Chinese rug industry has seen a move toward refined, sculpted floral designs that highlight the artistic capabilities of the weavers, blending ancient aesthetics with a sophisticated, modern sensibility.

The term '90 Line' refers to a traditional system of measuring the density of the knots within the rug. This specific count signifies the number of knots across a standard width, which directly impacts the clarity of the patterns and the longevity of the finished piece. Achieving this level of precision requires immense patience and technical skill, as the weaver must maintain consistent tension to ensure the floral designs are crisp and the pile remains uniform across the entire surface.

Signature design elements in this category often feature a central medallion surrounded by ornate, naturalistic floral arrangements. The use of carved or relief-style pile is a hallmark of this tradition, where specific areas of the pattern are trimmed shorter to create a three-dimensional effect. This technique adds depth and shadow to the floral motifs, making them stand out against the vibrant, solid-coloured fields that are common in this regional style.

Collectors value these rugs for their unique combination of structural quality and artistic expression. Owning a piece from this tradition is more than just a decor choice; it is an appreciation of a craft that has been passed down through generations. These rugs are cherished for their ability to bring a sense of history and cultural significance into a home, standing as a testament to the enduring appeal of hand-crafted textile art.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate countless hours to ensuring every detail of the floral design is perfectly captured. The process begins with the careful tensioning of the foundation, followed by the individual knotting of each Wool strand. This labour-intensive method is what gives the rug its exceptional density and structural integrity, ensuring it remains firm and beautiful for years to come.

The 2.7 kg weight of this 90 x 60 cm piece is a testament to the high volume of material and the significant amount of human effort invested in its creation. A rug of this size and weight indicates a dense, robust construction that requires a high degree of precision to achieve. This level of craft is essential for creating a pile that is both lush and durable, providing a tactile experience that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.
