China 90 LineHand KnottedRug

Dark blue / Beige76 x 140 cm

The tradition of rug weaving in China is a centuries-old craft that has historically been intertwined with the production of fine silks and textiles. While often associated with the imperial courts, the art form evolved to include wool, which allowed for the creation of heavier, more durable floor coverings that could withstand the demands of daily use.

The term 90 line refers to a traditional measurement system that indicates the density of the knots across the width of the rug. A higher line count typically corresponds to a more refined pattern and a tighter, more resilient pile. This technical standard is a hallmark of quality that ensures the longevity and structural integrity of the finished piece.

Chinese rug designs are famous for their symbolic language and balanced compositions. Common motifs often include floral arrangements, clouds, and geometric symbols that represent prosperity, longevity, or harmony. This specific rug uses a central medallion and a decorative border, which are classic elements designed to draw the eye and provide a sense of order and peace.

Collecting these rugs is an investment in cultural heritage and human skill. By choosing a piece from this tradition, you are supporting a legacy of craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations. These rugs are valued not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their ability to anchor a room with a sense of history and deliberate, thoughtful design.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate significant time and focus to every individual knot. The process is a labour-intensive journey that requires precise hand-eye coordination and years of acquired expertise to ensure the pattern is executed with clarity and consistent density.

The quality of this piece is evident in its substantial weight of 4.3 kg, which signals the density and amount of material used in its creation. This weight is a testament to the artisan's effort, as it requires considerable time to build such a dense foundation by hand, resulting in a rug that is both sturdy and luxurious.
