Gabbeh ModernHand KnottedRug

Orange / Brown195 x 288 cm

Gabbeh rugs trace their origins to the nomadic tribal weavers of the Middle East primarily pastoralists who created these thick comfortable floor coverings for their own daily use. Unlike formal workshop carpets traditional Gabbehs were spontaneous expressions of tribal life often featuring minimalist abstract layouts inspired by the surrounding desert landscape animals and everyday experiences.

The term Gabbeh itself translates from Persian to mean raw natural or uncut which speaks directly to the simple unpretentious aesthetic of the style. Originally woven with handspun wool dyed using natural plant extracts these pieces relied on a thicker pile and simpler knotting structures designed to provide maximum warmth and insulation during cold mountain nights.

Over time the Gabbeh tradition evolved into a contemporary favourite blending ancient tribal motifs with modern design sensibilities. The characteristic open fields and simple striped patterns found in modern interpretations maintain the spirit of the original nomadic weavers while fitting effortlessly into contemporary homes.

Owning a Gabbeh today connects you to a rich lineage of hand-knotting heritage where each weaver leaves a subtle personal narrative in the wool. It represents a celebration of slow craft cultural continuity and enduring tactile quality that mass production cannot replace.

This handmade rug represents weeks of careful human effort and traditional Afghan weaving expertise. Every single knot is tied entirely by hand bringing a level of dedication and precision that automated looms simply cannot replicate.

With a knot density of 90,000 knots per m2 distributed across its 288 x 195 cm dimensions a skilled artisan has painstakingly placed approximately 505,000 individual knots. This high knot count guarantees a robust structure exceptional pile density and lasting structural integrity.

Weighing 19.1 kg the substantial construction reflects the dense use of premium wool and traditional foundation work ensuring a heavy stable rug that lies flat and remains durable for generations.
