Hamadan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red133 x 210 cm

The Hamadan region in the Middle East is one of the oldest and most prolific areas for traditional rug weaving. Its history is deeply rooted in the daily lives of local communities, where weaving has been passed down through generations as both a necessity and an art form. The name Hamadan refers to a vast region encompassing hundreds of villages, each contributing its own unique variations to the classic rug styles we recognise today.

Technically, Hamadan rugs are celebrated for their sturdy construction and the use of high-quality wool. The term hand-knotted refers to the laborious process where each individual strand is tied by hand onto the foundation, a method that creates a much more durable and valuable finished product than machine-made alternatives. This traditional technique is what gives these rugs their characteristic weight and density, ensuring they can withstand decades of daily use.

Design-wise, these rugs often feature a central medallion surrounded by a field of stylised floral motifs and intricate geometric patterns. The borders are typically wide and well-defined, providing a formal frame for the central design. While many Hamadan rugs follow a traditional vocabulary, each piece is individual, often reflecting the specific preferences and artistic choices of the weaver who created it.

Collectors value Hamadan rugs for their integrity and the tangible connection they offer to ancient weaving traditions. Owning a piece from this region is not just about floor decor; it is an investment in cultural heritage and a testament to the skill of the artisan. These rugs are respected for their ability to age gracefully, often gaining a beautiful, lived-in patina that only adds to their character over time.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused labour to bring its intricate design to life. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the construction is exceptionally robust and precise, ensuring the pattern remains sharp and the pile stays firm over many years of use.

The weight of 9.8 kg for a 210 x 133 cm area is a testament to the high volume of premium materials used in its creation. This significant density not only contributes to the rug's longevity and structural integrity but also reflects the intense human effort and traditional expertise poured into every single knot.
