Ilam Sherkat Farsh silkHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black137 x 208 cm

The Ilam Sherkat Farsh represents a prestigious tradition of rug weaving from the Middle East, a region celebrated for its centuries-old commitment to textile excellence. These rugs are born from a culture that views rug making as a vital expression of heritage and artistic identity, where regional techniques are passed down through generations to preserve a distinct visual language.

The term Sherkat Farsh refers to the organised production and quality control standards established to maintain the integrity of these fine carpets. This institutional oversight ensures that each piece adheres to high standards of material quality and technical precision. For the collector, this means acquiring a rug that embodies both the creative spirit of the artisan and the rigorous standards of a historic weaving collective.

Signature design elements of these rugs often include elaborate floral patterns and finely rendered central medallions, which are carefully framed by ornate, multi-layered borders. The colour palettes are typically rich and saturated, reflecting a sophisticated use of natural dyes that gain character over time. This rug's specific combination of motifs and colours highlights the balance between traditional symmetry and the fluid, organic beauty of floral elements.

Collecting a piece from this tradition is an act of preserving history. These rugs are highly valued for their exceptional skill and the cultural weight they carry, serving as more than just floor coverings, but as enduring symbols of human creativity. Owning an Ilam Sherkat Farsh is a way to bridge the gap between ancient traditions and modern living, ensuring that these masterful techniques continue to be appreciated in contemporary homes.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that demands immense skill and patience from the artisan. With a density of 640,000 knots per m2, the sheer level of detail is extraordinary. This high knot count is the hallmark of premium quality, as it allows for the crisp, fluid lines and complex floral patterns that define the rug's character.

Given the size of 208 x 137 cm and the significant knot density, this rug represents hundreds of hours of focused human effort. The density of the pile is further supported by the substantial weight of 8.6 kg, indicating a robust construction that is built to last. This labour-intensive approach ensures that every knot is placed with precision, resulting in a durable, high-density surface that holds its shape and pattern clarity over time.
