Kashmir rugs originate from the beautiful valley of Kashmir in Northern India, a region with a deep-rooted history of textile artistry. The craft of silk weaving in this area was influenced by centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Road, blending local traditions with artistic styles from across the Middle East.

The term 'Kashmir silk' refers to a specific tradition of hand-knotting that utilises the finest silk fibres. This material is prized for its ability to hold vivid colours and its natural, lustrous finish. In these rugs, the silk is often woven onto a sturdy cotton foundation, which provides the necessary stability for the intricate patterns to remain crisp and well-defined.

Signature design elements often include elaborate floral patterns, tree-of-life motifs, and the classic 'boteh' or paisley, all framed by elegant, detailed borders. This particular rug utilises a panel layout, which is a sophisticated variation that allows for a collection of different botanical scenes to exist within a single, cohesive frame.

Collecting a hand-knotted Kashmir rug is an acknowledgment of a long-standing heritage of skill and patience. These pieces are valued not only for their aesthetic beauty but also for the cultural narrative they carry, representing a tradition where every knot is a testament to the artisan's dedication and the enduring allure of Indian craftsmanship.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and precision. Skilled artisans spend months working on a single piece, carefully tying every knot by hand to ensure the density and clarity of the complex floral patterns.

With a density of 490,000 knots per m2, this rug represents a high level of technical mastery. This incredible knot count allows for an exceptionally sharp and detailed design, while also creating a dense, resilient pile that is built to endure daily life.

The combination of the substantial 9.8 kg weight and the fine knotting technique results in a durable, high-quality foundation. This labour-intensive method is what gives the rug its refined character and ensures it remains a cherished item for generations.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural material that makes them a suitable option for people with allergies. The material is soft, durable and resilient, which makes them practical and comfortable for high-traffic areas such as the hallway, kitchen, and bathroom.

Silk

Silk is an exclusive natural fibre that provides a soft and shiny feeling to rugs. The material can also be used to enhance details in wool rugs and in some, silk can make up the entire pile and sometimes even the warp. Elegant rugs with rich details can only be made with silk because other fibres are too thick for this purpose. Silk is a durable and hard-wearing fibre that lasts a long time and becomes more beautiful over time. Due to its sensitivity to liquids, it is advisable to refrain from positioning the rug in areas where there is a high likelihood of moisture or potential spills.
