KeshanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black248 x 355 cm

Keshan rugs originate from the historic city of Kashan, a desert oasis in the Middle East that has been a centre for fine textile production for centuries. Historically, the city was a key stop on the trade routes, allowing local artisans to refine their techniques and access the finest materials to create rugs that were prized by nobility and collectors alike.

The hallmark of the Keshan style is its sophisticated design, which often features a central medallion surrounded by lush, scrolling floral vines and palmettes. These motifs are typically framed by a series of detailed borders, creating a balanced and formal composition that reflects a deep understanding of symmetry and artistic harmony.

Technical excellence is at the heart of the Keshan tradition. The craft relies on a dense knotting technique that allows for highly detailed, curvilinear patterns that appear almost painted onto the surface of the rug. This level of precision is what gives these rugs their reputation for durability, as the dense pile protects the foundation from wear over many years.

These rugs are highly sought after by collectors for their cultural significance and the high level of human skill required to produce them. Owning a Keshan is more than just purchasing a floor covering; it is an appreciation of a heritage that values patience, artistry, and the lasting quality of traditional hand-knotted work.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to every single piece. The process involves tying thousands of individual knots to create a dense, durable pile that allows for the intricate, crisp floral patterns you see on the surface.

With a weight of 32.6 kg, this rug reflects the significant amount of high-quality material and labour invested in its construction. This weight is a direct indicator of the density of the knotting, ensuring that the rug remains stable on your floor while providing a substantial, luxurious feel underfoot that lighter, machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.
