Keshan rugs originate from the historic city of Kashan in the Middle East, a region renowned for its deep-rooted weaving traditions that date back centuries. Historically, these rugs were favoured by royalty and the elite for their refined patterns and the exceptional quality of their materials.

The term Keshan refers to a specific style of weaving that emphasises a dense, resilient pile. This construction technique is vital for maintaining the clarity of the intricate designs over time, ensuring that the elaborate floral vines and central medallions remain sharp and distinct even after years of use.

Signature design elements of these rugs often include a central medallion surrounded by a field filled with complex floral arabesques and flowering vines. The borders are typically multi-layered, featuring guard stripes that frame the composition and provide a balanced, sophisticated appearance that has become synonymous with the Keshan style.

Owning a piece from this tradition is about connecting with a long lineage of craft and cultural heritage. Collectors and enthusiasts value these rugs not only for their aesthetic beauty but for the immense skill required to produce them, viewing each piece as a lasting contribution to the history of textile art.

This rug is expertly hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill from the artisans involved. By manually placing each knot, the makers ensure a level of density and structural integrity that provides both durability and a refined finish to the final piece.

The 160,000 knots per m2 density is a testament to the time and effort invested in this rug. With a total knot count of over 1.9 million, this piece represents a significant investment of human labour, allowing for the precise, intricate details seen in the floral motifs and borders that define its classic style.
