KeshanHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black295 x 408 cm

The Keshan rug tradition originates from the historic city of Kashan in the Middle East, a place long celebrated as a centre for fine textile production. These rugs are deeply connected to the region's cultural heritage, where weaving has been passed down through generations, evolving from royal commissions to the refined styles we appreciate today.

The term Keshan denotes a specific approach to design and quality. These rugs are often characterised by a high level of detail, with motifs that require a steady hand and a deep understanding of geometry and colour. The construction is designed to be both functional and visually complex, creating a texture that feels substantial and looks elegant in any setting.

Signature design elements of a classic Keshan often include a prominent central medallion surrounded by a field filled with elaborate floral patterns, vines, and palmettes. The borders are typically wide and intricately decorated, serving as a frame that contains the energy of the centre field. This specific piece showcases the traditional colour palette of deep reds and blues, which are hallmarks of this storied tradition.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an act of preserving a piece of craft history. These rugs are valued not just for their beauty, but for the immense skill and cultural context they bring into a modern home. Owning one is an invitation to connect with a legacy of artistry that continues to be relevant and admired by design enthusiasts worldwide.

This rug is a product of traditional hand-knotted craftsmanship, a process that relies on the skill and patience of expert artisans. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weaver ensures a level of precision and pattern clarity that simply cannot be replicated by machine production.

Given the substantial size of 408 x 295 cm and the weight of 44.5 kg, this piece represents a significant investment of labour and premium materials. The weight is a direct indicator of the density and thickness of the construction, which contributes to the rug's overall durability and its ability to withstand daily use while maintaining its shape.

The creation of a hand-knotted rug of this magnitude is a time-intensive endeavour that can take many months to complete. Every square centimetre is the result of focused effort, ensuring a robust foundation that provides both structure and a high-quality feel that distinguishes it from mass-produced alternatives.
