The art of flatweaving has ancient roots across the Middle East and Central Asia, where nomadic and village communities created durable textiles for everyday use. Kelim Ariana rugs represent a modern evolution of these timeless traditions, keeping centuries-old weaving methods alive while adapting colour palettes and designs for contemporary homes.

The term kelim refers to a flatwoven textile where the pattern is created by tightly interweaving warp and weft strands rather than knotting pile yarn. This technique produces a lightweight yet remarkably strong fabric that has served households for generations, prized for its versatility and lack of a bulky backing.

Signature design elements in this tradition include geometric diamonds, interlocking triangles, and tribal motifs arranged in harmonious repeats. The natural colour palette often draws from vegetable and plant dyes, creating soft, earthy tones that age gracefully over time and blend seamlessly into a wide variety of interior styles.

Rugs from this heritage are valued by collectors and design enthusiasts alike for their authentic connection to regional craft history. Owning a piece from this tradition means preserving ancient storytelling techniques and bringing a genuine artefact of human skill into your daily life.

This runner is meticulously hand-woven by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a region renowned for its deep-rooted flatweaving traditions. The process relies entirely on traditional wooden looms and hand-spun 100% wool yarns, requiring weeks of careful human labour to complete without the aid of any machinery.

The flatweave technique used here means there is no pile to cut, instead relying on the tight interlooping of the warp and weft threads to build a durable, reversible fabric. With a total weight of 2.4 kg spread across its 296 by 82 cm dimensions, the construction is dense and robust, designed to withstand daily use while maintaining its clear geometric patterns.

Every colour transition and geometric motif is carefully placed by hand, reflecting generations of accumulated weaving knowledge. This high level of human effort and precise hand-weaving ensures a sturdy, long-lasting textile that honours centuries of craft heritage.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
