Kilim ModernHand WovenRug

Brown / Orange200 x 290 cm

Kelim rugs have a long history rooted in the nomadic and village traditions of Central Asia and the Middle East. Originally woven as practical textiles for bedding, storage, and floor coverings in tents and homes, these flatweaves were crafted by communities who passed their patterns and techniques down through generations.

The term kelim refers to a flat-woven construction method where no pile is knotted into the foundation. Instead, the weft threads are tightly packed down over the warp threads to create a smooth, tapestry-like fabric that looks similar from both sides.

Traditional kelim design relies heavily on geometric shapes, sharp lines, and symbolic motifs such as diamonds and triangles. This modern interpretation reinterprets classic regional patterns through a contemporary lens, using contrasting shapes and an expressive colour palette to bridge heritage craft with current interior styles.

Owning a handmade kelim connects your home to a living craft tradition that values resourcefulness, patience, and visual storytelling. Each piece stands as a testament to the weaver's skill, offering a lasting slice of cultural heritage for modern living.

This kelim rug is carefully hand-woven by skilled artisans in Afghanistan using traditional flatweaving techniques. Without a raised pile, the warp and weft threads are tightly interlaced by hand to build a strong, unified cloth.

Weighing 11.6 kg across a 290 x 200 cm format, the dense construction requires a significant investment of human labour and time. Artisans spend weeks passing shuttles of wool through the loom by hand to achieve the precise tension needed for clean geometric lines and long-lasting strength.

This hands-on method results in a durable, reversible textile where the maker's skill is visible in every woven line. The careful attention to detail ensures a sturdy structure that holds its shape and appearance over years of use.
