Kilim SumakhHand WovenRug

Dark red / Red110 x 143 cm

Kelim Sumakh rugs originate from the rich weaving traditions of the Middle East, where nomadic and village communities perfected techniques to create durable, decorative textiles. The term Sumakh refers to a specific wrapping technique that dates back centuries, distinguishing these flatwoven pieces from standard pile carpets by offering enhanced structure and distinct surface texture.

The technical skill involved in Sumakh weaving requires wrapping coloured threads around the foundation warp in precise sequences. This method allows artisans to incorporate complex geometric lines and figurative elements that remain crisp and clear across the flat surface.

Signature design elements of this tradition include detailed borders framing central fields filled with symbolic motifs, often featuring stylized animals, humans, and tribal symbols. The multicolour palette uses traditional natural dyes that age gracefully over time, lending the rug a warm, lived-in depth.

Owning a piece from this heritage tradition connects your living space to centuries of cultural storytelling and artisan mastery. These textiles are valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their enduring strength and the profound cultural narrative woven into every thread.

This rug is entirely handmade using a traditional flatweaving and Sumakh technique, a meticulous process where coloured weft threads are wrapped around the warp threads in a distinctive decorative stitch. This method creates a sturdy, textured surface without a traditional piled nap.

Weighing 2 kg across its 143 x 110 cm dimensions, the dense construction reflects the considerable time and skilled labour invested by the artisan. Each motif and line is carefully positioned by hand, demonstrating a level of precision and patience that machines simply cannot replicate.

The dedication required to produce such a detailed piece ensures exceptional longevity. By investing in this hand-woven craft, you support generations of accumulated knowledge and traditional techniques passed down through artisan communities.
