As a one-of-a-kind creation, this rug possesses a unique soul. No two pieces are ever identical, meaning you are bringing home an original work of art that will never be replicated. Owning such a piece allows you to enjoy a level of distinctiveness that mass-produced items simply cannot offer.

Beyond its visual appeal, the rug excels in its functional benefits. The dense wool construction naturally absorbs sound, helping to create a calmer and more serene atmosphere in your living space. Its long-lasting quality ensures that it will remain a cherished feature of your home for many years to come.

Koliai rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, crafted by the Kurdish tribes who have inhabited these areas for centuries. These rugs are deeply tied to the nomadic and semi-nomadic traditions of the region, where weaving is not just a craft but a vital cultural expression passed down through generations.

The term Koliai refers to the specific tribal style that emphasises sturdy construction and bold, geometric aesthetics. The use of robust wool in these rugs is a functional choice, designed to withstand the rigours of mountain life while providing essential insulation against cold temperatures.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their powerful use of colour and large-scale motifs. The central medallion is a signature element, often surrounded by smaller, stylised geometric patterns that tell stories of the weaver's environment and heritage. The borders are typically bold and structured, framing the design with a sense of rhythm and balance that is synonymous with the Kurdish weaving tradition.

Collecting a Koliai rug means acquiring a piece of living history. These rugs are highly valued for their authenticity and the sheer human effort required to bring them to life. They are more than just functional floor coverings; they are tangible links to a rich, enduring culture that continues to influence modern interior design with its timeless, artistic spirit.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to each creation. The process begins with a foundation of durable cotton, upon which thousands of individual wool knots are tied by hand to build the final design.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the precision required for this level of detail is significant. This high knot count is the hallmark of a premium rug, ensuring that the patterns remain sharp and the pile retains its structural integrity over time.

Weighing 16.6 kg, the rug demonstrates the substantial amount of high-quality wool and intense labour invested in its construction. Every knot and every strand of fibre represents a commitment to traditional methods that turn raw materials into a durable, heirloom-worthy floor covering.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural material that makes them a suitable option for people with allergies. The material is soft, durable and resilient, which makes them practical and comfortable for high-traffic areas such as the hallway, kitchen, and bathroom.
