Black / Dark red149 x 245 cm

Koliai rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, specifically crafted by the Kurdish tribes. These rugs are deeply connected to the nomadic heritage of their weavers, who have historically used their craft to reflect the environment and the stories of their community. This region is famous for its resilient and bold textile traditions that have been passed down through generations.

The term 'Koliai' refers to the specific tribal group responsible for these distinctive pieces. These rugs are typically known for their robust wool and sturdy construction, which were originally intended to withstand the harsh conditions of mountain living. The use of high-quality, local wool and traditional dyeing methods ensures that these rugs retain their vivid, earthy tones for decades.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their bold geometric medallions and intricate, stylised floral motifs. Unlike more formal urban rugs, Koliai pieces often feature a more spontaneous and expressive design language, with borders that frame the field in a way that feels both balanced and energetic. The use of deep red, blue, and dark tones is a signature of this tradition, creating a look that is both dramatic and inviting.

Owning a Koliai rug is a way to connect with a centuries-old tradition of skilled artistry. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the human story woven into every knot. By bringing one into your home, you are not only adding a beautiful, durable floor covering but also preserving a piece of cultural heritage that stands as a testament to the talent of its creators.

This rug is created through a traditional hand-knotted process, a labour-intensive method that requires immense skill and patience. By knotting the wool pile individually onto a sturdy cotton foundation, the artisan ensures a construction that is both dense and incredibly resilient. This traditional technique is what gives the rug its distinct texture and longevity.

The effort behind this piece is evident in its substantial weight of 18.3 kg across its 245 x 149 cm frame. This density is the result of thousands of hand-tied knots, each placed with precision to create the complex, geometric motifs seen in the design. Such a construction requires months of dedicated focus, resulting in a finished product that is far more durable than mass-produced alternatives.

The quality of this rug is rooted in the physical effort and time invested by the weaver. By focusing on the tension of the pile and the strength of the foundation, the maker has ensured that the pattern remains sharp and the structure remains firm. This level of craftsmanship is what elevates the rug from a simple textile to a premium, heirloom-quality piece.
