Koliai rugs originate from the Kurdish tribes inhabiting the mountainous regions of the Middle East. These rugs are deeply rooted in a nomadic and semi-nomadic tradition where weaving is a primary form of cultural expression. The designs often reflect the rugged beauty of the landscape and the ancestral stories passed down through generations of Kurdish weavers.

The term Koliai refers to the specific style and technique developed by these tribes. These rugs are known for their robust construction and the use of high-quality, hand-spun wool, which is often dyed using traditional methods to achieve deep, lasting colours. The construction is typically characterised by a sturdy foundation, which ensures the rugs are functional as well as beautiful.

Visually, Koliai rugs are celebrated for their bold, geometric designs and central medallions. They often feature a play between dark, earthy tones and vibrant accents, creating a striking contrast that draws the eye. The borders are usually ornate, framing the field with intricate motifs that demonstrate the weaver's mastery of symmetry and pattern composition.

Collecting a Koliai rug is an investment in a living heritage. These pieces are valued for their authenticity and the sheer skill required to produce them without the aid of modern machinery. To own one is to preserve a piece of history, celebrating the resilience and creativity of the Kurdish people who have kept this craft alive for centuries.

This Koliai rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that demands immense skill and patience. With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2 and a total size of approximately 4.38 m2, this rug contains roughly 700,000 individual knots. Each one is placed by hand, a task that requires months of dedicated labour from a master weaver.

The substantial weight of 21.9 kg is a direct result of the high-quality wool used and the density of the construction. This weight ensures the rug lays flat and provides a durable, long-lasting foundation for your home. The time and human effort invested in every square centimetre are evident in the rug's firmness and the clarity of its complex geometric motifs.

By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a tradition that values precision over speed. The weaver's careful attention to detail ensures that the structural integrity of the rug is second to none, resulting in a finished product that is built to last for generations.
