Koliai rugs originate from the mountainous regions of the Middle East, specifically crafted by the Koliai Kurdish tribes. These rugs are deeply rooted in the nomadic and semi-nomadic traditions of the region, where the art of weaving has been passed down through generations as both a necessity for daily life and a vital form of cultural expression.

The construction of these pieces often utilises a high-quality Wool pile on a cotton foundation. This combination is chosen for its strength and the way it absorbs deep, rich dyes. The term 'Koliai' refers to the specific tribal origin, and these rugs are highly regarded for their robust build and the spirited, often bold, artistic choices made by the weavers.

Design-wise, Koliai rugs are famous for their vibrant, geometric interpretations of traditional motifs. You will typically see a prominent central medallion surrounded by stylised floral or tribal patterns that fill the field. The borders are often broad and decorated with intricate, repetitive designs that frame the central action, creating a balanced yet energetic visual language.

Collecting a Koliai rug is a way of preserving a piece of tribal heritage. These rugs are valued not just for their aesthetic appeal, but for the skill required to maintain traditional weaving techniques in an ever-changing world. Each rug serves as a testament to the weaver's personal vision and the enduring legacy of Middle Eastern textile artistry.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to bring each design to life. The process begins by hand-tying individual knots onto a sturdy cotton foundation, a technique that requires immense precision and a deep understanding of the craft to ensure the pattern remains perfectly aligned across the entire surface.

With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2, this rug contains approximately 1,127,000 individual hand-tied knots. This immense labour-intensive effort is the reason for the rug's durability and the sharpness of its design. The significant weight of 22.5 kg reflects the generous amount of high-quality Wool used and the density of the construction, ensuring that the rug will remain a reliable part of your home for years to come.
