KunduzHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red195 x 283 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern regions of Afghanistan, a territory with a long and storied history of textile production. These rugs are deeply tied to the nomadic and semi-nomadic traditions of the local tribes, who have perfected the art of wool preparation and natural dyeing over countless generations.

The term Kunduz refers to the specific provenance of these pieces, which are celebrated for their sturdy construction and traditional motifs. The use of hand-spun wool is a hallmark of this craft, creating a pile that is naturally resilient and develops a beautiful character as it ages, reflecting the authentic materials used in its making.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their rhythmic use of geometric shapes and stylized floral elements. The classic dark-red and beige colour palette is deeply traditional, often featuring repeating medallion patterns that create a sense of order and balance. These motifs are not merely decorative but are rooted in a visual language that has been passed down through centuries of weaving families.

Owning a Kunduz rug is a way to connect with a living tradition. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their raw, unpretentious beauty and the immense human effort required to create them. They represent a bridge to a historic way of life where every rug tells a story of the region and the individual artisan who brought it to life.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and patience. By securing each individual knot by hand onto a sturdy cotton foundation, the artisans ensure a level of density and structural integrity that is impossible for machines to imitate.

Given the substantial weight of 17.1 kg and the generous dimensions of 283 x 195 cm, the construction is exceptionally dense. This density is the result of thousands of hours of dedicated work, ensuring a rug that is both heavy enough to lie perfectly flat and durable enough to withstand high-traffic areas in your home.
