KunduzHand KnottedRug

278 x 404 cm

Kunduz rugs originate from the northern Afghan region of Kunduz, an area with a deep heritage in traditional rug-making. Weaving here is often a generational craft, passed down through families who preserve ancient regional techniques and visual storytelling.

The traditional hand-knotted construction involves tying individual strands of wool onto a supportive base. This meticulous method creates a sturdy structure and a dense pile that holds its appearance well over years of use.

The visual language of Kunduz rugs is typically defined by geometric motifs and repeating field patterns, framed by elaborate decorative borders. Deep red and dark red palettes are characteristic of the region, creating a rich and grounded aesthetic.

Owning a rug from this tradition means bringing a piece of cultural history into your home. It represents countless hours of human skill and a lasting connection to the artisanal heritage of Central Asia.

This rug is entirely handmade and hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of careful labor to its creation. Each knot is individually tied by hand, resulting in a dense and durable construction that is built to withstand daily life.

With a knot density of 160,000 knots per m2 across its 404 x 278 cm size, the total knot count reaches approximately 1,797,760 individual knots. This high level of precision ensures sharp pattern definition, a dense pile, and long-lasting structural integrity.

The substantial weight of 33.7 kg reflects the generous amount of natural material and the tight, robust knotting technique invested in the rug. This intensive hand labor is what gives the piece its exceptional quality and enduring strength.
