MashadHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black290 x 375 cm

Mashad rugs hail from the city of Mashad, a major cultural and religious centre in the Middle East. Known for its long-standing tradition of weaving, the region has developed a distinct style that often features complex, curvilinear designs and elaborate pictorial elements. These rugs are highly regarded for their sophistication and the depth of their artistic expression.

The term 'hand-knotted' refers to a technique where each individual knot is tied by hand onto the foundation. This process is the hallmark of quality in the region's weaving tradition. It allows for a level of detail in the design that is impossible to achieve with other methods, ensuring that the motifs are crisp and the pile is dense enough to withstand generations of use.

Signature elements of a Mashad rug often include a central medallion surrounded by a complex field of floral or pictorial motifs. While traditional patterns are common, the artistic freedom of the weavers often results in unique, narrative-driven designs like the one seen here. The rich blue and beige colour palette is characteristic of the region's preference for vibrant, yet balanced, tones that complement both traditional and contemporary settings.

These rugs are deeply valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their cultural weight and the skill required to produce them. Owning a Mashad rug is an investment in human craft and history. It represents a commitment to preserving an ancient art form, offering a sense of permanence and beauty that mass-produced items cannot match.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who have mastered a tradition passed down through generations. To create a piece of this size and complexity, which contains approximately 1.74 million individual knots, requires months of focused, repetitive labour. This immense human effort is what gives the rug its exceptional density and structural integrity.

The weight of 45.7 kg is a direct result of the high-quality materials and the tightness of the weave. This weight is a clear indicator of the density of the construction, ensuring that the rug will lie flat and maintain its shape over years of use. Each knot is placed with precision, contributing to the fine pattern definition and the long-term resilience of the pile.

By choosing a hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a labour-intensive craft that prioritises quality over speed. The time, precision, and physical effort invested by the weaver are evident in the final product, resulting in a floor covering that possesses a level of detail and character that simply cannot be replicated by any machine.
