Usak rugs trace their rich heritage back to the historic town of Usak in western Anatolia, which served as a major centre for carpet production during the Ottoman Empire. Over generations, this distinctive weaving tradition spread beyond its original borders, finding a vibrant new home in the skilled workshops of Afghanistan, where local artisans embraced and reinterpreted these classic motifs.

The traditional crafting techniques behind these rugs involve careful hand-knotting traditions passed down through families. Artisans use hand-spun natural wool dyed with traditional methods, ensuring each rug develops a rich patina and a depth of colour that improves gracefully over time.

Visually, Usak rugs are celebrated for their distinctive approach to design, often featuring large-scale floral motifs, medallions, and flowing vine scrolls arranged with a certain artistic freedom. The dark-brown field of this specific piece serves as a striking backdrop for the colourful floral elements scattered across the surface, creating a balanced and harmonious composition.

Collectors and design enthusiasts deeply value Usak rugs for their historic artistic weight and the warmth they bring to interiors. Owning a piece from this tradition means preserving a living craft history, celebrating the dedication of the artisans who keep these ancient techniques alive.

This rug is entirely handmade through a careful hand-knotted technique that demands exceptional skill and patience from the weaver. Every single knot is tied by hand onto the foundation, requiring months of dedicated daily work to complete a piece of this substantial size and quality.

With a knot density of 40,000 knots per m2, the weavers have achieved a balanced and enduring structure across the entire surface. This considered density ensures that the pile remains resilient under daily use while securely holding the intricate patterns in place.

Weighing 30 kg, the substantial construction reflects the heavy investment of raw materials and human effort required to build such a robust foundation. This rigorous handmade process guarantees a level of durability and structural integrity that machine production simply cannot replicate.

Address spills promptly to minimize staining. Blot the affected area gently with a dry, undyed cloth—never rub, as this may embed the stain further into the fibers.
