Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner77 x 539 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is famously linked to the historic Silk Road city of Bukhara, which served as a major centre for trade and culture in Central Asia. While the style takes its name from this ancient hub, the finest examples today are primarily produced in Pakistan, where artisans have perfected these classic techniques over generations.

The '2ply' designation refers to the specific way the wool is prepared for the loom. By twisting two strands of wool together before knotting, the artisans create a pile that is not only denser and more luxurious to the touch but also significantly more durable. This technique allows for a richer lustre and ensures the rug maintains its shape and beauty through years of use.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their rhythmic field of repeating motifs, often referred to as 'gul' or elephant-foot medallions. These geometric shapes are arranged in precise rows, creating a sense of order and calm that is softened by the warm, traditional palette. The inclusion of decorative borders frames the central design, providing a formal finish that anchors the entire piece.

Owning a hand-knotted rug from this tradition is an act of preserving a long-standing craft. These pieces are highly valued by collectors not just for their visual appeal, but for the human story embedded in every knot. They represent a bridge between historical weaving traditions and modern home comfort, offering a sense of heritage that mass-produced items cannot replicate.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and patience. Each individual knot is tied by hand, ensuring the rug possesses a level of structural integrity and pattern precision that simply cannot be achieved by any other method.

With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the creation of this runner represents hundreds of hours of focused human effort. This high knot density is the secret to its refined appearance and exceptional longevity, as it ensures the pile remains dense and resistant to wear even in high-traffic hallways.

The weight of 10.4 kg across its expansive 539 x 77 cm dimensions serves as a testament to the quality of materials and the labour-intensive construction involved. This significant weight is a direct result of the dense wool usage, confirming that this is a substantial, long-lasting piece built for daily life.
