Pakistan Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner78 x 392 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of Central Asia, taking its name from the legendary Silk Road city of Bukhara. While these rugs were historically woven by nomadic tribes as functional items for their tents, the style has evolved over centuries. Today, some of the finest examples are produced in Pakistan, where artisans have perfected these classic techniques to maintain the tradition's high standards.

The '2ply' designation is a mark of quality that refers to the construction of the wool pile. By twisting two strands of wool together before they are knotted, the weaver creates a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also significantly more durable. This technical choice ensures the rug feels substantial and holds its appearance over time, making it a practical choice for a busy home.

Bokhara rugs are instantly recognisable for their signature gul motifs, which are repeating, octagonal medallions that resemble elephant footprints. These are typically arranged in symmetrical rows across the field and framed by complex, geometric borders. This specific runner honours that heritage with a deep red field that allows the motifs to stand out with clarity and elegance.

Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara is more than just purchasing a floor covering; it is an investment in a storied craft tradition. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their cultural weight and the undeniable skill required to produce them. By bringing this piece into your home, you are continuing a legacy of artistry that connects your modern space to ancient weaving practices.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each knot onto the foundation, the weaver ensures a level of quality and durability that simply cannot be achieved through mass production.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, this piece represents hundreds of hours of dedicated labour. This high knot count allows for the intricate, crisp motifs seen across the surface and results in a significantly denser, more luxurious pile that is built to withstand years of use.

The substantial weight of 7.6 kg for this 392 x 78 cm runner is a testament to the quality of materials and the density of the construction. This weight ensures the rug lies flat and stays firmly in place, reflecting the significant amount of wool and human effort invested in its creation.
