Pakistan Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black201 x 293 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of the Silk Road, taking its name from the ancient city of Bukhara in modern-day Uzbekistan. While the designs originated with nomadic tribes in Central Asia, the finest contemporary examples are now primarily woven in Pakistan, where artisans have perfected the intricate techniques required to produce these iconic floor coverings.

The term 3-ply is a hallmark of superior craft in this tradition. By twisting three strands of wool together, the weavers create a pile that is not only denser and more durable but also possesses a distinct sheen that catches the light beautifully. This level of technical attention ensures that the rug is not just a decorative item, but a long-lasting household asset.

Visually, these rugs are defined by the repeating gul motif, which are medallion-like shapes that often resemble elephant tracks. These are organised in a structured, symmetrical grid across the field, framed by elaborate, multi-layered borders. The red colour palette is traditional and highly prized, representing a classic aesthetic that balances boldness with sophistication.

Collectors value these rugs for their balance of artistic heritage and practical utility. Owning a piece from this tradition is an opportunity to house a tangible piece of history that honours the skill of generations of weavers. It is a testament to the enduring appeal of craftsmanship that remains relevant and cherished in modern homes.

This rug is crafted using a meticulous hand-knotted technique, a process that demands immense patience and precision from the artisan. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 293 x 201 cm piece represents a significant investment of time and human skill, ensuring the final product is both durable and visually sharp.

The 3-ply construction refers to the use of three strands of wool twisted together to form each yarn. This specific method creates a thicker, more resilient pile that stands up well to regular foot traffic while maintaining a lustrous, high-quality appearance that single-ply rugs simply cannot match.

With a total weight of 18.3 kg, the rug demonstrates the substantial amount of high-quality material woven into its structure. This weight is a direct indicator of the density and the extensive labour required to complete the rug, providing you with a heavy, stable piece that lies flat and maintains its form over time.
