PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Yellow200 x 200 cm

Patchwork rugs represent a fascinating evolution in the history of textile art. While traditional rug weaving often focuses on a single, continuous field, the patchwork style emerged as a creative way to preserve and reimagine older, high-quality textiles. By carefully selecting fragments from existing hand-knotted rugs, artisans give new life to beautiful materials, honouring the history of the original pieces while creating something entirely new.

The craft of creating these rugs relies on a deep understanding of material quality and colour coordination. Artisans must have an expert eye to identify which pieces will work together, ensuring that the final assembly feels cohesive rather than chaotic. This process requires not only technical skill in joining the segments but also a refined aesthetic sense to balance the various patterns and textures found in the original fragments.

Design-wise, these rugs often feature a rich mix of floral and geometric motifs, reflecting the diverse traditions from which the individual pieces are sourced. The borders and medallions typical of traditional Middle Eastern rugs are often deconstructed and reassembled, creating a dynamic visual experience. The result is a rug that feels like a collage of history, where every square tells its own story while contributing to a unified, vibrant whole.

Collecting a patchwork rug is an investment in both sustainability and artistic heritage. It celebrates the idea that beauty can be renewed and that the skills passed down through generations can be adapted to fit contemporary homes. Owning such a piece signifies an appreciation for the human effort involved in textile preservation and a desire to bring a one-of-a-kind element of history into your living space.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires a significant investment of time and human skill. By working with individual segments, the artisans ensure that the final composition is sturdy and long-lasting. The weight of 14 kg is a testament to the density and the generous amount of material used, signalling a high standard of construction that prioritises both structural integrity and comfort.

The hand-knotted technique is essential for creating the durable, high-quality pile you feel when walking across the rug. This method requires a steady hand and a deep understanding of textile tension, ensuring that every knot contributes to the overall resilience of the piece. The physical weight of the rug combined with its 200 x 200 cm dimensions reflects the substantial effort put into its creation, resulting in a floor covering that is built to endure for years of daily use.
