PatchworkHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown203 x 250 cm

Patchwork rugs originated in Turkey as a creative way to repurpose aged, vintage carpets. Smaller, well-preserved fragments of vintage hand-knotted rugs are carefully washed, re-dyed, and hand-stitched together, giving historical textiles a second life in modern interiors.

The term hand knotted refers to the traditional method where individual yarn loops are tied by hand onto a woven frame. In vintage patchwork rugs, these time-tested knots ensure that despite their age, the original fabric pieces remain tight, durable, and resilient.

The design features a varied composition of geometric and ornate panels, bringing together distressed motifs from different regional traditions. Soft grey and brown tones unify the varied patterns, creating a cohesive visual balance across the entire surface.

Vintage Turkish Patchwork rugs are highly valued for their sustainable craftsmanship and individual personality. Acquiring a piece like this brings a distinct historical narrative into the home, celebrating traditional weaving heritage in a contemporary form.

This rug is hand knotted in Turkey using traditional techniques passed down through generations of artisans. Every individual knot is tied by hand, resulting in a robust construction built to withstand years of use.

Weighing 17.8 kg across its 250 x 203 cm dimensions, the density of materials highlights the substantial amount of hand labour and raw wool invested in making the piece. The individual vintage sections are meticulously stitched together to assemble the final design.

The extensive skill and effort required for hand-knotting, combined with the vintage repurposing process, give this rug a level of durability and personal craftsmanship that machine production cannot match.
