ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Brown / Dark red172 x 248 cm

The Shabargan rug hails from the northern regions of Afghanistan, an area with a profound history of nomadic and sedentary weaving traditions. These rugs are deeply connected to the cultural landscape of the Middle East, where the art of the loom has been passed down through generations as a primary form of creative and social expression.

The quality of these rugs is defined by the use of hand-spun Wool, a material prized for its natural resilience and ability to hold vibrant, long-lasting dyes. The construction involves tying thousands of individual knots onto a foundation, a technique that produces a dense, lustrous pile that is both soft to the touch and incredibly durable.

Visually, this tradition is known for its bold approach to geometry and colour. While many regional styles favour specific repeating medallions, this particular design incorporates wide, rhythmic stripes alongside ornate geometric borders, creating a sophisticated visual narrative that balances order with artistic flair.

Owning an Afghan rug is an investment in heritage and human skill. Collectors value these pieces not only for their aesthetic appeal but for the way they represent a living tradition. Each rug serves as a document of the weaver's intent and the cultural identity of their home region, making it a meaningful addition to any thoughtful home.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense skill and patience. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the total knot count for this rug reaches approximately 682,000 individual knots. This precision is essential for achieving the sharp, defined geometric details and the dense, luxurious pile that defines the quality of the piece.

The craftsmanship is further evidenced by its substantial weight of 14.5 kg, which confirms the high volume of material used and the tightness of the construction. Creating a rug of this size and density is a feat that takes a skilled artisan months of dedicated work to complete, ensuring the final product is not only visually striking but also robust enough to handle years of daily life.
