ShabarganHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black206 x 301 cm

The Shabargan rug hails from the storied weaving traditions of Afghanistan, a region where rug-making is deeply embedded in the cultural and social fabric of local communities. These rugs are often produced by nomadic or semi-nomadic groups, reflecting a heritage that has navigated the challenges of history while preserving ancient techniques.

The technical quality of these rugs is defined by their dense, hand-knotted construction using high-quality Wool. This method results in a pile that is not only soft to the touch but also incredibly resilient. The natural oils in the Wool are preserved during processing, which contributes to the rug's inherent lustre and its ability to age gracefully over time.

Visually, these rugs are defined by a sophisticated language of geometric motifs, often featuring repeating medallions and intricate border work that draw inspiration from the natural world and tribal symbolism. The use of traditional, earthy dyes gives each rug a vibrant yet grounded appearance, making them instantly recognisable to those who appreciate authentic craft.

Owning an Afghan rug is more than just a purchase; it is an investment in cultural heritage. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the labour-intensive skill required to produce them. When you bring a rug like the Shabargan into your home, you are connecting with a long lineage of artisans and securing a piece of art that carries real weight and lasting significance.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that demands immense skill and patience from the artisan. With approximately 55,700 knots painstakingly placed by hand across its surface, the creation of this piece represents a significant investment of time and human effort, ensuring a level of precision that machines cannot replicate.

The density of the construction is further highlighted by its substantial 19.8 kg weight, which serves as a testament to the quality of materials used and the tightness of the weave. This robust build not only defines the rug's durability but also ensures that the intricate geometric patterns remain sharp and well-defined over time.

Every element of the rug, from the selection of the Wool to the final knot, reflects a commitment to traditional craft techniques passed down through generations. By choosing this hand-knotted piece, you are supporting a legacy of skill that prioritises longevity and intentional design over convenience.
