How to clean your outdoor rug in 9 steps

Unsure about how to wash an outdoor rug? If you’re looking to freshen up your garden, balcony or patio rug, here’s how to clean an outdoor carpet in 9 easy steps.

Step 1: Inspect the rug

Before cleaning, inspect the rug for any stains, debris, or mould growth. This helps you identify areas that need special attention.

Step 2: Shake or hoover

Begin by shaking out or hoovering the rug to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris. This step prevents the dirt from going deeper into the fibres during the cleaning process.

Step 3: Hose down and use washing-up liquid

Take the rug and lay it flat on a clean surface. Use a garden hose to thoroughly rinse the rug with water. Ensure you hose both sides of the rug to remove all dirt. Take a small amount of washing-up liquid with water in a bucket. Avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the fibres of the rug.

Step 4: Spot treat stains

For stubborn stains, apply a mixture of water and washing-up liquid directly to the affected areas. Use a soft brush or sponge to gently scrub the stain in a circular motion. Allow the detergent to penetrate the stain for a few minutes before rinsing.

Step 5: Rinse thoroughly

After spot treating stains, rinse the entire rug with clean water using the hose. Make sure to rinse until the water runs clear, making sure that all washing-up liquid residue has been removed.

Step 6: Dry in the sun

Once the rug is thoroughly rinsed, hang it over a sturdy clothesline or lay it flat on a clean, dry surface in direct sunlight. Sunlight helps to naturally disinfect and deodorise the rug, while also aiding in the drying process.

Step 7: Rotate regularly

To ensure even drying, rotate the rug periodically while it’s drying in the sun. This helps to prevent any areas from remaining damp for too long, which could lead to mould growth.

Step 8: Hose down the rug

Should you pressure wash an outdoor rug? This is a commonly asked question when it comes to outdoor rug cleaning. While using a hose is okay, avoid using high-pressure settings, as this can damage the fibres of the rug. Instead, choose a gentle spray setting to effectively clean the rug without causing any damage.

Step 9: Regular maintenance

To keep your outdoor rug looking its best, establish a regular cleaning schedule. Depending on the amount of foot traffic and exposure to the elements, aim to clean your outdoor rug every few weeks or as needed.
