Large green rugs, sage to forest | Rugvista

Large green rugs measure 230 to 349 cm on their longest side, which at Rugvista covers 160 x 230 cm, 200 x 250 cm, 200 x 300 cm and 240 x 300 cm, plus 250 x 250 cm squares and 80 x 250 cm runners. At this size the rug stops being an accent and becomes the largest block of colour in the room, so the shade matters more than it does for smaller sizes. Muted sage and olive sit quietly alongside wood and neutral walls, while forest and dark green hold their own against pale floors and lighter furniture.

Choosing a shade of green for a large rug

Because a green rug this size sets the palette rather than following it, it helps to choose the shade against the things in the room you won’t be changing: the floor tone, the sofa, the wall colour. Green also shifts with the light it sits in. North facing rooms pull sage and mint towards grey, while warm afternoon light pushes olive further towards yellow. Patterned greens are worth a look at this scale too. Vintage, Kilim and Gabbeh designs carry several tones at once, which reads as softer across a big floor and hides everyday marks better than a single flat colour does. A plain deep green looks striking but shows dust, lint and vacuum lines over 200 x 300 cm, so it suits a room that gets regular attention. For the same sizes in other colours, see large rugs, and for a hard-wearing option in these shades, see large wool rugs.

Frequently asked questions

Muted sage and olive are the easiest to live with at 200 x 300 cm and above, because they behave almost like a neutral next to wood, linen and stone. Forest and dark green make a stronger statement and work best in rooms with plenty of natural light or pale walls to balance them. Mint and light green keep a large room feeling open.

Not on its own. What changes the feel of the room is the depth of the shade rather than the size of the rug, so a dark green at 240 x 300 cm will close a room in more than a sage green at the same size. If the room is short on daylight, a lighter or multi-toned green keeps the floor from reading as a solid dark block.

Let the rug lead, since it’s the biggest colour in the room. Warm greens such as olive sit well with tan leather, oak and brass, while cooler greens such as sage and forest pair more comfortably with grey, black and cooler metals. Keep the other large pieces in neutral tones and add colour through smaller items instead.

Generally, yes, at this size. Vintage, Kilim and Gabbeh designs combine several green tones, so dust, crumbs and footprints are far less visible across a large surface than they are on a single flat colour. A large plain green rug gives a cleaner look but asks for more regular hoovering.
