Baluch rugs

Baluch rugs are hand-knotted in wool by nomadic tribes, known for a deep, earthy palette of black, dark red and brown and the bold geometric motifs that mark each tribe’s work. Our collection spans narrow accent rugs and Baluch runners from around 80 x 150 cm up to large room-size pieces over 190 x 300 cm, so there’s a good chance of finding the right fit for a hallway, bedroom or living room. Each Baluch rug is hand-knotted individually rather than to a fixed pattern, so no two are quite alike.

Wool, weave and character

Baluch rugs are woven by individual tribes and weavers rather than to a factory pattern, so knot density and pattern scale vary from rug to rug: some are finer and more densely knotted, others show bolder, larger-scale motifs. All are 100% wool, hand-knotted using techniques passed down through generations of nomadic weavers – naturally hard-wearing and warm underfoot, and inclined to soften and settle rather than show wear. Because each Baluch carpet is made individually, older pieces develop a soft patina that’s part of the appeal, while newer ones offer crisper, more defined detail.

Frequently asked questions

A Baluch rug is a hand-knotted wool rug made by nomadic Baluch tribes, including weavers from Afghanistan, recognised by deep, earthy colours and bold geometric patterns. For the full history, symbolism and how they’re made, see our guide: What is a Baluch rug?

Our Baluch rugs range from small accent pieces around 80 x 150 cm up to large room rugs over 190 x 300 cm, plus a few extra-large runners. Many traditional Baluch rugs were woven in narrower, elongated formats, which makes them a natural fit for a hallway or beside a bed. Check our rug size guide if you’re unsure what will suit your space.

Baluch rugs work well in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms and hallways alike. Smaller pieces under around 150 cm suit an entryway or bedside spot, while the larger sizes anchor a seating area or dining table.

Baluch rugs are woven by individual weavers rather than to a fixed factory pattern, so knot density, pattern scale and finish differ from rug to rug. A finer, denser knot generally means a more detailed pattern and a longer-lasting rug, while a slightly coarser weave can mean bolder, larger-scale motifs – neither is better, just a different character.

An antique Baluch rug offers genuine age, natural wear patterns and a documented weaving tradition that a new rug can’t replicate. If you want character over uniformity, an antique piece is absolutely worth buying; if you’d prefer crisper detail and a longer lifespan ahead of it, a newer Baluch rug might be the more practical choice.

Hoover regularly on a low suction setting, since Baluch rugs are hand-knotted with a lower pile than machine-made rugs. Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth rather than rubbing, and use only wool-safe cleaning products, as traditional dyes can react to harsh chemicals. Rotate the rug occasionally to even out wear, and keep it away from prolonged damp, which can cause wool to lose shape.
